Are you trying to find the right dental insurance plan for you? The best place to start is to learn the difference between the two most common types of dental insurance: PPO and HMO plans. So which one can you benefit from most? Read on to learn about a few different types of dental insurance plans as well as which one is right for you!

What’s the Difference Between a PPO and HMO Plan?

The two types of dental insurance plans are similar, but there are a few key differences to be aware of. Primarily, PPO plans will typically have an annual maximum, which is the most your insurance provider is willing to pay for your dentistry in one year. Most HMO plans do not have a set maximum.

One difference is that PPO plans require a deductible, which is a fee you pay to essentially unlock your coverage for the year. Typically, HMO plans don’t have a deductible, but they do require you to share a percentage of the costs based on a flat rate.

Another difference comes with who you can choose to see for dentistry. HMO plans will usually require you to see a dentist within the network, which is why they can be more affordable. However, PPO plans come with the freedom of being able to choose whoever you’d like to receive care from—in or out of the network.

Which Type of Insurance is Best for You?

Any dental insurance is better than none at all. Studies show those with dental insurance are automatically more likely to have better oral health because they see their dentists more regularly. So, should you choose a PPO or HMO plan? Is there one that’s better than the other? You should pick the dental insurance plan that best fits your needs and lifestyle.

Do you want to be able to visit a variety of dentists in or out of network? If so, your best bet is to choose a PPO plan. However, if you don’t want to keep track of having a deductible and annual maximum, plus you’re okay with choosing a primary dentist, the HMO plan may be right for you. It might be as easy as seeing what your job has to offer. If you’re satisfied with the PPO or HMO plan that they provide, discuss your benefits with your employer and you may have your answer! An expert dentist in Arlington Heights is also a great resource—they’ll be able to answer any questions you may have about coverage.
