In the early 1900s, a dentist named Dr. Frederick McKay began noticing something strange in Colorado Springs. Many residents had brown stains on their pearly whites. Today, this is called \u201cfluorosis,\u201d but back then it was a total mystery. The most curious thing of all? Despite the discoloration, the brown teeth were incredibly resistant to cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McKay teamed up with other researchers like Dr. G.V. Black to investigate, and they eventually discovered the cause: high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the local water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These findings made the team wonder if smaller doses of fluoride could protect teeth without causing stains. From here, they set out to find the answer, leading to what the CDC hails today as one of the Top 10 Public Health Achievements of the 20th Century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Community to Add Fluoride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fast-forward to 1945. Dr. H. Trendley Dean’s research found the ideal fluoride levels for preventing cavities. Based on his findings, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first U.S. city to add fluoride to its water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a decade, dentists observed a significant drop in cavities among children\u2014nearly 60 percent fewer cases! The results were so compelling that other cities quickly followed Grand Rapids\u2019 example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fluoride in Modern Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once the benefits were clear, fluoride started making its way into other places like toothpaste and mouthwash. The first fluoride toothpaste hit shelves in the 1950s, and now it’s hard to find a tube that doesn’t include it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to at-home products, dentists also offer concentrated fluoride treatments during cleanings to give teeth a little extra protection. This practice has created stronger, healthier smiles for millions of people in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
