According to the\nAmerican Childhood Cancer Organization, a family gets this devastating news\nabout three minutes. During September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, our\nteam at Westgate Dental Care is going gold. With several patients who have\nbattled childhood cancer, our practice hosts a fundraiser every September to contribute\nto the effort to end this disease. In this blog post, you\u2019ll learn how you can\nhelp in our fundraiser and how our team can perform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westgatedentalcare.net\/preventive-dentistry.html\">oral\ncancer screenings<\/a> for your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Childhood Cancer Awareness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is estimated that one out of 285 children in the United\nStates will be diagnosed with cancer before they turn 20 years old, and out of\nthose 20 percent will not survive it. Although childhood cancer is not as\nprevalent as cancers in adults, it is the number one cause of death by disease\nfor children in America. That\u2019s why we\u2019re dedicated to helping as much as we\ncan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Donations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, childhood cancer research and trials require\na lot of time and, therefore, a lot of money to find ways to save lives. Over\nthe past few years, Westgate Dental Care has donated $3,000 to Lurie Children\u2019s\nHospital and Comer Children\u2019s Hospital, both located in Chicago, where many\nchildren are treated. This year, we hope to donate $500 to Comer\u2019s. Basically,\nwe\u2019re hosting our fundraising event on Facebook. For every like, we\u2019ll donate\n$2, and for every new review our patients post, we\u2019ll donate $5. We invite\ncommunity members to participate in this effort and help us reach our goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oral Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our team at Westgate Dental Care can help your child stay\nhealthy and cancer free in another way. At every checkup, we closely examine your\nchild\u2019s oral cavity for signs of oral cancer. Although the average age of\npatients who are diagnosed with oral cancer is 62, children and adolescents can\nstill be at risk for developing oral cancer. Especially as high-risk\nactivities, such as vaping and exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV),\nbecome more common in younger populations, these frequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westgatedentalcare.net\/preventive-dentistry.html\">screenings<\/a>\nare even more important to maintain for your child\u2019s health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This September, you can show your support for Childhood\nCancer Awareness Month by participating in our fundraising efforts, wearing a\ngold ribbon, or donating to organizations seeking a cure for cancer. Also, if\nyour child hasn\u2019t had a dental checkup and cleaning in a while, you can\nschedule an appointment with us at Westgate Dental Care so that they can have\nan oral cancer screening.
