And you may be surprised to learn that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss! Not to mention that it\u2019s been found to increase the risk of many other diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer\u2019s and some cancers. In this blog, you\u2019ll learn about the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Arlington Heights, how it\u2019s diagnosed, and what treatment options are available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gum disease isn\u2019t usually painful until it\u2019s in advanced\nstages. But there are still early signs and symptoms to be aware of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Gingivitis\n&#8211; <\/strong>This is the earliest stage of gum disease and often starts when you notice\nbleeding after brushing and flossing. You may also develop swollen or tender\ngums. The good news about gingivitis is that it can usually be reversed with\nregular checkups and good oral hygiene habits.&nbsp;\n<\/li><li><strong>Periodontitis<\/strong>\n\u2013 If gingivitis isn\u2019t treated in time, it can progress to moderate or advanced\nstages of gum disease (called periodontitis). Symptoms include chronic bad\nbreath, loose teeth, receding gums, or pain when chewing. Advanced gum disease\ncan\u2019t be reversed or cured &#8211; but there are treatments that can manage it to\nprevent further progression and tooth loss.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Gum Disease Diagnosed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a year (during one of your 6-month checkups), either a\ndentist or hygienist will evaluate your gum health. Their goal is to find gum\ndisease as early as possible, when treatment is the most effective, so they can\nrecommend the appropriate therapy right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Gum Disease Treated? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, the first type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westgatedentalcare.net\/gum-disease-treatment.html\">periodontal\ntherapy in Arlington Heights<\/a> that\u2019s recommended is what\u2019s called scaling\nand root planing (sometimes called a \u201cdeep cleaning\u201d). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this procedure, a hygienist will thoroughly remove\nthe tartar and bacteria under the gumline and smooth the roots to prevent\nbacteria from re-accumulating.
